Occorre architettura. Come fu per Valadier con Piazza del Popolo

E’ una Promenade, questa che deve racconte e interpretare anche la storia di questo “nuovo” quartiere di Roma. Perchè è nato. Una Promenade dove passeggiare; una piazza nella quale sostare; un giardino per giocare, sdraiarsi. Stare. Tutto questo insieme. E deve avere una fontana in grado di competere con le Fontane di Roma

Lungo l’asse che unisce l’ovale di Piazza del Popolo con l’ovale di Piazzale Ponte Milvio. L’ingresso dal Nord, a Roma. L’ingresso dalla Flaminia, nel quartiere

Tutte le strutture saranno sollevate su pilotìs, esattamente come deve essere, per questo quartiere

Fare sistema con MAXXI, Auditorium, Ponte della Musica, Nervi, Moretti, Libera. Non si tratta più di episodi, ma di un quartiere completo all’altezza della storia urbanistica di Roma

Gli alberi esistenti resteranno: non c’è nessun motivo perchè non restino. Si ridisegneranno i giardini a terra

I turisti devono voler venire a vedere questo luogo. La sera si deve voler vivere questi spazi. Passeggiare tra i pilotìs, attraversando indistintamente giardini, piazze e strade. Non c’è un altro quartiere simile

Un’architettura evanescente, non prevista, alla scala della città. All’altezza di questa città

The Nasaru School is part of a long term project which has the aim to build a center able to work both as a school, a food productive area, a community center and a basic cultural place to present and protect the Massai Lenkobei traditions. Energy and water self sufficiency and ealthy living conditions are among the main targets of the project, as the location presents extreme climate and geographic conditions.

Massai Lenkobei community is seminomadic. Their construction methods are precarious, made of branches and mud. They construct family/clan units where women and kids remain year round. Each one consists of a circle between ~¼ hectare. At the center of the circle they keep their cattle, the mound is usually elevated, using cattle dung. These circles are protected enclosures traditionally designed to keep themselves and their cattle safe from predators. The enclosure is made with thorny acacia branches which protect the families in the internal areas, living in small units around the inner edge of the enclosure. The height of the enclosure barrier varies and it may be up to 2 meters.

The New Harbour of Marina San Vincenzo located in the middle of the Tuscan town, is meant to function as the new aggregating pole for the citizens.
With this premise, we have envisaged a series of structures which may favour the full integration between the established town and this new building intervention:
_2 covered parking lots, one on the north side of the intervention and one on its south; these are studied to make use of the gap in ground levels between the beach and town, so that their roof coverings may also be used as the grounds of a “piazza” (a public square) in the first case, and as a “giardino” (a public garden) in the second case.

_A series of small shops at wharf level, are placed on the plan so that they may determine a series of small pedestrian squares.
_A second series of small shops placed in front of the parking lots, always at wharf level, conceal the parking areas and create a walkway “passeggiata” (a public pedestrian route).
_A “piazzetta” (a small public square), onto which the Yachting Club looks out, the historic tower symbol of the town and a stairway established by the plan, which connects the wharf level to the square on the north parking lot: this stairway will work as open air “cavea” (entertainment space) for public events, shows and projections.
_A series of technical structures functional for the harbour: the nautical working site, the control tower, covered parking lots, etc.

The northern square was developed with a series of slanted planes which may work as seating areas to lookout onto and admire the sea: these planes have also all been aligned, so that this large “sala urbana” (urban hall) may be used for open air concerts and allow for good visibility of the stage, from all points of the square.
The southern garden was envisaged as a contemporary garden, inspired by the geometric sequences of waves. A slanted seating area is also present in this garden, positioned towards the sea, where one may sit or lie down to enjoy the sunshine.
The main reference for the design of these public spaces is naturally the beautiful Piazza del Campo di Siena, just a few kilometres away from San Vincenzo.

THE AREA

The local area “Spregamore” is characterized by a landscape of scattered small villas with gardens and cultivated fields.
The territory presents slopes and hills which are typical of the Roman countryside.
Access to the area is under a railway bridge, which works as a sort of “door”, enhancing the “community” characteristics of the area.

THE SQUARE

The aim is to turn this piazza into something the neighbourhood will be able to identify with. We worked with this objective in mind, so that each component of the project could play a significant part even on the sensorial plane:
The whole square was “rested” on the orography of the site as if it were a sheet placed over some objects.
There are two founding principles in the project:
_the will to respect as much as possible the topography of the site: a surface running for the whole extension and interrupted only by sudden rises in height;
_an absolute continuity between all the architectural components in the piazza.
The organization of the square was planned to respond to the different needs of users in different moments of the day, like a small weekly market as required by the neighbourhood.
The wooden floor play area for the children lies within a small bush of “cercis siliquastrum” of recent planting.

THE CIVIC CENTRE

The civic centre has been placed in a central area with respect to the piazza, making use of one of the rises in height. This also corresponds to our initial principals and starting points:
a_ Respect of the context.
b_ Dialogue with the community and “green” feeling of the area
c_ Project open to the various requirements the neighbourhood may express
d_ Importance given to all those sensorial and psychological aspects which pertain to a location.

The new building of about 120 sqm, is born form the sudden rise of height, lowering it to the portion of the piazza below the civic centre, in order to form a sort of cave when the community may organize small exhibitions.
The roofing of this civic centre may be included as part of the piazza itself.

The Centre develops inside as a whole open space. The structural system has no pillars and the possibility of opening an 8,5m front looking onto the piazza, allowing an outside use as well when the weather allows.

On the same side there are a number of sliding panels with wooden beams to protect from sunlight.
There also some roof-windows made of sanded glass, bringing light even to the most hidden areas of the Centre and working as illuminated elements on the piazza at night time.

Internal finishing will be in “minimal” style for three reasons:
1)_meeting with concrete building possibilities in order to complete the work
2)_a non invasive architecture which may be interpreted by users and not impose on them
3)_costs containment

Cement, coloured maioliche, cor-ten, concrete blocks are the materials used.

“LE CITTA’ VISIBILI”

La scalinata diviene un racconto nel quale una serie di episodi prendono corpo, trovando il loro epilogo nel “giardino” ; diviene un pentagramma sul quale un tema musicale si sviluppa in un succedersi di improvvisazioni. Ogni strumento esprime le proprie caratteristiche, compie il proprio assolo, esaltandosi nel confronto crescente con gli altri elementi della “band”.
Roma legge la sua orografia attraverso le scalinate. Una scalinata conduce ad un tempio: qui il tempio è il verde. Compito dell’architetto è, a nostro avviso, non quello di dominare il luogo, quanto piuttosto leggerne le sue potenzialità intrinseche , i segni celati, ponendoli in superficie senza snaturarli. La città è un’unione di frammenti , è li la sua forza; la percezione di ciò si sviluppa per la città con un andamento schizofrenico. Dal punto più alto dell’area si osservano le “CITTA’ VISIBILI” : il Vittoriano, il Tabularium, Le cupole, Il Gasometro, La città industriale, l’edilizia selvaggia. Il progetto si basai su una geometria dai tracciati astratti.
Dalla lettura del luogo ,del suo sviluppo orografico, ne è derivata una trama di relazioni tracciata come una serie di nodi, punti focali, percorsi. E’ il tentativo di ricostruire un ordine che in ogni luogo esiste celato. Un insieme di elementi si dispone sul terreno, comprimendosi ed espandendosi , in armonia o in contrasto con le curve di livello, e questa moltitudine di frammenti organizza scenari multiformi e spazi dinamici. Gli scorci che si aprono al fruitore stabiliscono tensioni con lo spazio circostante .

- 3º Prize in the competition “Le 100 Piazze” – Comune di Roma

The project is based on the dual concept rome / sea.

The sea provided the geometry; the city provided the theoretical concepts.

In our intentions, the new dock becomes, a landmark on the territory whith which the city may identify itself as it looks out onto the sea.

THE CITY

We naturally believe that this project is related to Rome, its future development, and therefore its past. This relation is much stronger for us than the relation with the local context in Ostia.

Developmnet across the centuries has indeed used rome as a “matrix” on which traces of time and periods were left.

In this sense, we consider the use of computer aided techiniques as a “new architecture”, with new parameters implying the following:

- A much more complex control of geometries.

- The developmnet of structural calculations with a much bigger number of variables.

- Organisation, even from a production and management point of view of much more arcticulate systems.

In the historical, architectural development of Rome, our “big wave” , in reaching the sea from the city, builds a direct dialogue with “the big cloud” by Fuksas in reaching the city from the sea.

THE SEA

We adopted the “wave’s movement” as a geomterical system in the project: the bidimensional, sinuous geometries deriving from the analysis of motion in the fluids, in the different conditions of sea level, wave breaking and land.

We inserted these geometries in the computer, and carried out a number of trials and attempts, “leaving” to technology the job of developing complex volumes and using a certain “degree of casuality” within the creative process, until we obtained a satisfactory result. We then proceeded in the more “traditional” development of the project, respecting the geometries inserted in the structure obtained and without changing the initial matrix.
